First thing I noticed was the smiling.
If the words were not there to read, and I guessed what she was saying, it would be an explanation of something good.
Video shows man in car, window down and his left elbow and forearm resting over top of car door; definitely not an aggressive posture. Officer at window (one of three police officers- they are not overwhelmed), glances back at other officers signaling he is about to act. The officer even has a little sadistic smile on his face… Then at point blank range, without warning, very suddenly drenches man’s face that is sitting in the automobile with riot control pepper spray. You can see the spray impacting him square in the face and eyes.
Hell yes the MAN was traumatized. But the man is not being interviewed. Yes, the girl- friend is enjoying her moment of fame dramatizing her vicarious “trauma.”
I’m an avid defender of the thin blue line. But from what I can tell, this was bull-s___ behavior on behalf of at least one officer.
Maybe the guy in the auto was being a smartass. Can’t tell.

I will add, their is a condition when bad news comes your way that you respond with a smile and sometimes laughter.

The thin blue line is also better known in legal terms as assessory during/after the act. Government “servants” work under a higher code of conduct, tyranical beasts don’t have a code of conduct. They are merely beasts.
It’s always interesting to me that they at first say they were cooperating then the truth comes out that they were actually not.

Just show the ID, no matter why they ask, then proceed on your way. Simple.
When I was a kid, we used to always joke “Show me your papers, pleez” in a parody of the nazis. It’s so sad that today, in the US where freedom is supposed to reign supreme, that we have people who insist it’s only proper that we submit. Why should they show their papers? I’ve been stopped so many times just to see ID, and for no other reason than I have long hair, that I long ago quit being nice to cops about that. This is designed to control you. To keep you a slave. I really can’t believe that I have to point this out here. Just submit is what you are saying. I will never submit. You have fun with that conformity. I’ll choose freedom.

They’re not that different. Which is why it’s called “America Lite”. Personally, I believe in liberty and justice. The whole law and order crowd is about submission. And this crowd, cheering it on, are americans. Claiming all they had to do was submit. Which is sad.
Since the boyfriend is driving the car in Canada, police can stop him at any time and ask to see his license and vehicle registration along with vehicle insurance, which is mandatory here. They don’t need suspicion or evidence of a traffic offense, they can just stop a driver at any point and ask for this information. If they suspect you are driving under the influence of alcohol, they can force you to take a breath test. You cannot decline these requests without risking arrest. Canadians do not even have the right to speak to a lawyer before a breathalyzer test.
And so if you ask them why, they can then just casually reach over and spray you? The cop seemed pretty callous to me. Not moving as if it were a life or death decision; just moving as if he did it because he could. So, the cops are just as big of buttholes as they are here in the states. Good to know. Luckily for me, I have no urge to ever go up north again. Thanks.
The expression on the officers face looked more like exasperation, to me, than sadistic.
Canada is completely different than the states, when it comes to interacting with the cops (constables). If he wants your id, you don’t have the right to refuse. They know that. Also, if you think the courts are biased in favor of the cops here, Canada makes our courts look like cop haters.
We don’t know how long that interaction was taking place before the events we see here. The fact that there’s 3 cops standing next to them and no others in site, suggests there more going on here than we know of.
My guess is that the guy doesn’t have a license.
You don’t know any of that.
You don’t know what has taken place prior to small window we have available.
You don’t know that officer or what kind of a person he is. In fact, it appears as though you are biased by your own less than ideal interactions with law enforcement and are painting ALL officers with the same brush. Due to your bias.
An officer does NOT need to be assaulted or threatened in order to be justified in the use of pepper spray. Passive resistance is enough, which appears to be the case here.I

By the way, I didn’t see you scolding anyone else for their biases in favor of the cop. Or against the woman (who I agree is childish, but how is that not the norm today?). A little consistency. Is the badge so sacred? Law is how they outlaw freedom.
There was only one other person on here making numerous argumentative posts and I advised him against such behavior. You are the only one making numerous biased rants and judgements. Over a dozen anti police posts, not counting the arguments.

Since it appears you didn’t catch that part in my previous post, I’ll repeat it. When an officer gives you a lawful order and you refuse to comply. Refusing to get out of your car, refusing to put your hands behind your back or even just locking your car door. Are all passive forms of resisting arrest.
We don’t know enough about things yet, to be able to determine if he was justified in his actions or not.
You don’t know she refused. But we do know the officer didn’t raise his voice in a command. We know he was not in danger as the move was too casual. It is also done the way I have seen it done before. But I guess you believe that when you are told to do something by the cops you should only obey without asking/questioning/anything. You DO NOT know whether the officer raised his voice. You only have e few seconds of video at the END of their interaction.
You are not “questioning” authority, at least not here, you are ACCUSING them.
Besides, you do not “question” authority by resisting arrest, at least rational people don’t, you monitor them and question their actions.
I believe in following LAWFUL orders. Not following them could get you pepper sprayed and arrested. If it is NOT a lawful order, then I may follow it or not, depending on a great many factors. Without risk of getting pepper sprayed and arrested. Knowing the difference could keep you out of jail. I

He just admitted that one should automatically submit to authority without thinking and that all orders from them are justified. That is the definition of a slave mind. We had an entire civil rights revolution in the United States based on morally reprehensible actions by law enforcement officials… as well morally reprehensible lynch mobs (same folks , just different uniforms). The only difference is that we labeled “passive” resistance as “non-violent” resistance. It worked legally for Martin Luther King (not to mention Ghandi). It should work for everyone.
Personally I believe the pepper spray happy officer should be convicted of assault because the video presents enough clear evidence to call a spade a spade. Unfortunately, because our judicial branch of government doesn’t have the backbone (or has been sufficiency corrupted in one form or another) to apply our legislatively adopted laws equally to the executive branch of government, these gross travesties will continue to happen. In my opinion, it is this corrupted third pillar of government that should be causing the most concern for citizens of both countries.
In Alberta, Canada one is only required to produce ID if operating a motor vehicle or under arrest. I believe that rights are like muscles. You need to exercise them or you risk losing them. Check the laws in your area.
It is like that here in fluorida, and I exercise those muscles. Ussually it only takes one time as once they find out your not a pushover, they just stare at you. It’s a groupthink thing where we are told we are the enemy. They are trained to think that way here in school and in the stations. That we are the enemy. But they generally back down if they realize you aren’t a wuss, even if it goes bad that time. For example; in the town I live in now, it happened once. For about three months whenever one of those yokels saw me their mouths just gaped open, but they said nothing to me. Which is exactly as it should be.

I feel a little bit like an intruder into this conversation, and a very late one at that. But, here goes…..
Mr. Redneckdavinci, I understand — kind of — what you’re saying and where you’re coming from. I believe that we are ALL sovereign individuals that have been granted certain rights just by being born. Although there are probably a lot of people who would disagree with me, I believe that we are ALL born on an equal footing. Level playing field. But, what happens to us after Day One of our lives is what will determine where we end up in the pecking order of whatever society we belong. An awful lot of our ‘stock’ will be decided FOR us by others, without our consent, before we turn eighteen. I don’t see much of ANY way MOST of THESE things can ever be changed. Such as what social strata you were born into. Rich, poor, middle class, etc. Our education will be chosen FOR us — by our parents if we were born into a rich family; by the State for everybody else. But when we reach adulthood (which seems to be later and later in this day and age), WE are ‘in charge’ of WHO we will become.
I don’t know if you have any religious background, or whether you’re NOT religious AT ALL, or you figure YOUR spirituality is YOUR business and you live by the credo of “By their fruits ye shall know them.” (Personally, I fall into this last category.) In other words, I have a PERSONAL relationship with my Creator God. I got my basic Bible training by going to church on Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night prayer meeting growing up. I haven’t been in a church since 1987, though. But there are SOME THINGS that just stick with you through life. And one of those things, for me, was learning and UNDERSTANDING that GOD instituted government way back, literally in the beginning. Like it or not, having a leader over the people WAS God’s idea. That’s what makes America such a special place, though. Our founders ETCHED INTO THE STONE OF OUR FOUNDATION that ALL men are born with certain inalienable rights. But WITH those Rights comes Responsibility. Such as LIVING BY THE LAWS OF THE LAND. God COMMANDS us to live by the Laws of our homeland UNLESS such Law seeks to come between God and the individual, or any Laws that directly oppose God’s Laws.
So you’ve come across some corrupt LEOs?? Take that up with the court during your hearing/court proceedings. DON’T pre-judge every LEO by any BAD ACTORS you’ve run across. THAT is a recipe for disaster! So is that chip you have on your shoulder! Bring these two ‘recipes’ together and it could end up VERY BADLY for you! You may also want to remember this: You were pretty rough on Charles Harris in your comments. I know he can fend for himself, but it makes you look…….’bullyish’ is the best word I can come up with without having to use the keys in the top row. And most people know that bullies are just trying to hide something about themselves, perhaps even FROM themselves. In my mind, things change when you decide they change. I don’t really come to this site anymore, though I support the site, because the threads are filled with people who live in a fantasy world where the authorities have our best interests in mind. They don’t. This thread is filled with people who believe in submitting to all authority figures instantly. Those people are slaves. I don’t hang out with slaves. Here in the US, you only have to show ID if you are suspected of committing a crime.
Cops will, almost always, ask for the ID of anyone they interact with. But you only have to actually show it if you’re detained or arrested. Once you’ve been detained or arrested, refusing to identify is a crime in itself.
Some people here don’t understand the difference and it makes for some interesting YouTube videos. lol

the reason why I keep saying human, is because they are and learning body language you have to see past the uniform. it does not excuse the behavior but if you label it, you end up blinding yourself. We expect them to fight their human side while in uniform….Understand that…we also need to understand they reacted to something.
We also need to understand that cops are not all above breaking the law. The badge is often used as a cover for criminality. Their job is to enforce the laws of the state, not to protect the citizenry. In fact, one of the biggest problems (there, as well as here) is the militarization of police. They are not military, but they are likely to be used as such. Think of all the times the cops (there, as well as here) have been caught instigating riots by impersonating those back bloc anarchists (really not anarchists as they violated all the principles which anarchy is based upon.). There is a reason I don’t trust cops.
which is why you have to look past a uniform…what drives people to do those things. they are human. So just like a family, some are the leaders, some are the enforcers, some are the workers, some are the trouble. their politics are not the same amongst them. so when you look at them at people you can relate to the ones that are not criminals. you can also SEE them.
I have worn those uniforms (not cop, military) and I can look at the video of the spraying and know there was nothing worth spraying someone in the face over. While you are saying I should realize the cops are human; so are the people they sprayed. We will definitely have to agree to disagree on this. The cops should have been sued. And I, for one, hope that city pays those slugs a fortune.

Follow the facts if you want to know what happened. Public reaction to these type of situations are usually 90% based on individuals personal belief systems on the topics of authority, race, and the police. That invariably leads to lack of understanding of the facts and a rush to judgment. As Mandy aptly points out, this girl is displaying body language that contradicts being traumatized, and may be deceptive, which tells a bit of the story, but I’m sure there is more to it. The sad part about lethal shootings by police in the US is that public outcry always starts without knowledge of the facts, then leads to officers being overcharged by political DA’s to pacify to public, with the result of officers being acquitted. Most of the time the facts reveal resistance accompanied by behaviors that are interpreted as a threat, sometimes accurately and sometimes inaccurately. The fact that the bizarre-looking woman was wearing a tube sock when she has no business wearing in itself probably deserved a slight spritz of pepper spray on her fashion choice.
While she is obviously an attention “tart”, I don’t think that discounts her story. What is the time lag between the incident and the trial? I’ve been gassed with real CS (and chemical weapons of the deadly variety, thank you Herbert Walker Bush for your incubator baby war!), I was never traumatized by any of them. I’m sure she’s over-stating her case on that point, for the upcoming lawsuit, but does that invalidate the event? Sure, she’s a bit deceptive, and extremely shallow, but how can we tell anything from this clip unless we know more about what was going on. If I seem extremely hard on cops it is because I have long hair. I’m not a violent person, I even help old ladies, but I tend to be treated by cops as if I were an axe-murderer. Plus, I live in Fluorida where the entire justice system is almost as corrupt as california. We have private prisons operating at a massive profit here. Our local prison is under-staffed by about 90% so the company can make more money. The fines do not amount to enough for them to hire more. Why? Because Gov. Scott never found a corporation that couldn’t buy him. Or the rest of the legislation. Sorry for the rant.
