I found this fascinating. Shapiro, I have concluded, is on the spectrum. I say that from my experience with kids/young men on the spectrum. His confidence in what he says backed by a brain full of facts along side that hesitancy within himself is what I noticed and I think you explained.
I also find it fascinating that Shapiro hates Milo….. I think your explanation of him here explains why.
As for Jordan…. I think he is one of the most important minds of this time. Important more so if you are a parent to a boy…

Good as ever! I think anyone with any sense would feel somewhat intimidated by sitting in front of Jordan Peterson in public conversation, not because he is unkind or aggressive, but because he sees so much and has the capacity to reveal so much if he chooses. Unfortunately he is also interviewed relentlessly by people without any sense who say silly, repetitive things and waste everybody’s time. I had never heard of him until your first body language study of ‘The Interview’ at which point i began watching a lot of his youtube videos and became fascinated by his views on just about anything, most of which i agree with. I am also fascinated to discover that he suffers from intractable, familial depression and autoimmune disorders and has recently discovered in his and other family members cases this can be controlled by a strict diet consisting of meat. in other words ‘he has been around the block a few times’ himself which i respect. I am a 70-yr old woman, and in nobody’s fantasy world could be called a right-wing type so I find your comments about his place on the political spectrum just about right – er, i mean correct.

Interesting contrast between the two individuals. I have watched several of Jordan’s videos and in most cases I agree with the point he is trying to make. On the other hand, it takes him forever to get to it. I would not call it “overanalysis” but maybe “hyperanalysis”. Over my career in the mental health field, I have worked with many psychologists and psychiatrists who share the same trait. They usually have trouble working with families who are in crisis because they hyperanalyze and cannot summarize and get to the point, so the families cannot follow them. He appeals to the intellect. Shapiro, on the other hand, seems to be a provocateur who tries to get people to think by challenging belief systems, and pushing the envelope. Jordan would deal with liberal bias on campuses by analyzing and debating about it, whereas Ben would want to expose it by creating a social drama where his mere presence incites an overreaction by leftists, Antifa, and the universities he speaks at. Cat might be right- Ben might be on the spectrum, but if he is, he is at the very high functioning end of it. Both have their place. I know from reading his newsletter, that Ben is a concealed carrier, and is armed where it is allowed. Given the places he speaks at, he should have bodyguards. My guess is that he has been a victim of severe bullying in the past, lack of confidence might come from that. His intelligence and wit probably served him well in the past.

Having done 5 semesters of a psychology degree before understanding that a psychologist can’t tell you what you are doing wrong but needs to lead you down the path of discovery, and then quitting because I could not do that, I can fully understand why Jordan talks the way he does!
He is lecturing in most of his videos and leading the students down that path of discovery. So many people have said what you said about him and found him long winded in this period of 10 min youtube videos. I sort of agree but I find him very educational as opposed to entertaining which the likes of Milo and Alex Jones fit into.

As I see it from experience Shapiro is definitely high functioning, his comfort zone is in his information so he can very easily withstand the challenges from the public with quick facts. My son does not percieve bullies as typical people would, he sees them just as annoying and I think that is how Shapiro does as they never phase him or fluster him….. ever….. He has had legitimate threats against him as a conservative and a Jew and from memory he does have bodyguards.

Your analysis of the two is very good.

Love your work, Mandy. As usual, your spot on about Peterson and Shapiro, both men are near the center, from the Left (Peterson) and Right (Shapiro).
I’ve seen many of Peterson’s videos and recommend them to anyone with a couple of hours to invest in high quality verbal performances, loaded with information and insights. He is definitely a quality over quantity communicator, he is always sorting and editing the information to match his audience, which is why I think he often takes long pauses before speaking.
I find myself fascinated by the doctor’s hand gestures as he speaks; often elegant gestures that act out the ideas as he is communicating. Too bad his hands were folded during the majority of this conversation, I would love to get your observations on this.

In my opinion the most valuable piece of insight comes from Mandy at the very end: “Your local elections are what’s going to be important”.

Unfortunately the fellow citizens that come to this important realization typically comprise less than 20% of the voting populace. I believe that education, with a emphasis on social responsibility, is the only thing that will change this disappointing reality. Confident or not, both subjects in this video seem to be providing an earnest attempt at meaningfully contributing to this process.

Keep up the good work…and thanks for sharing !

Amazing video Mandy thank you!
Once Shapiro was stopped by a security guard and here’s the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2iIAXp5KRo
This is as close to something physical in nature as it gets. I don’t see him backing down even though he breaks eye contact here and there but I think in your video Shapiro was just nervous talking to Jordan as anyone familiar with the man would be.

— “I actually think Mandy is right regarding his ‘nature’. However smart people know when it’s in their self interest to rebel against their own nature.”

This is a good point. Just because it is one’s nature to behave a certain way, it does not mean they cannot override said behavior, if only temporarily. And in Ben’s case, it shows true bravery on his part — even more so since he is natrually averse to confrontation.

Here’s another great video where Ben showcases this bravery very well:

And here is Ben’s commentary on that incident:

The wise owl vs. a nervous sparrow. There’s big money behind Shapiro, misspent.

There’s money behind Shapiro because he has a lot to offer in terms of getting a message out and challenging the way people think. He was harshly bullied as a child which makes him skiddish at times. He’s not what you’d call an “alpha male” in many respects. But the remarkable thing about Shapiro is that in spite of all the bullying he suffered as a child, he refuses to fall into the victim hood mentality. In fact he regularly, almost ritualistically, explains the regressive and destructive nature of the victim hood mentality. He is a young man who is still fighting the trauma from being bullied as a child. But he is fighting to overcome what has happened to him in the past, as opposed to caving in to it and allowing himself to be a victim of things others did to him. He understands that what you do moving forward and how you respond to that is what counts. I think he is a remarkable young man who has already had an immense impact (for the better) on the way people think about not just politics but perhaps more importantly, society and culture. He also gets a lot of money behind him due to his ability to relate to and reach a younger demographic. Whenever he talks with people who are older than him, whether it’s Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, or even Adam Carolla, you can tell he is definitely the kid in the room. But that isn’t because he’s not their intellectual equal, it’s because he IS the kid in the room. Older people find it endearing, and younger people relate to it. He is on the rise and will be a very important voice for decades to come.

Everyone has a backstory, but Shapiro’s bottomline or baseline, and why he may have big money behind him, is that he hates Trump. I really don’t care much for him personally, or his squeaky voice, either. Other than that, I bet he’s a great guy. ; )

I love Peterson, and I love Shapiro. They are both pillars of free thought.

In this specific instance, I believe that Shapiro had a chance to interview someone that he holds in extremely high regard.
I would be breaking eye contact and acting nervous in the presence of someone that held hero status with me as well.
Don’t forget…Shapiro is very young, despite his awareness and smarts. That is not to disparage Shapiro…just to put this situation into context.

Mandy your confidence in your skills is obviously very high, and justly so. Do you ever catch yourself in mistakes, or jumping to conclusions prematurely? I find it a little difficult to believe that everybody has the exact same body language. Don’t some people react differently?
I have been watching a lot of your videos lately and they are very informative and often funny at the same time, I like them very much.

That’s surprising. Shapiro seemed very confident when he went on Dr. Drew’s show and was actually threatened. I would actually go as far to say that he was genuinely fearless. It’s actually my favorite video of him. Here’s the video. Do you think he still shows a lack of confidence? Or was he more confident than usual in this video?

I really think that Shapiro is somewhere on the Autist spectrum. Just the way he flicks around. As I see Nathan Stolpman @lifttheviel is also awkward but not lacking self confidence but unusual body language.. Not moving at all as wiggling to much..Shapiro seems to always has this manner

This was good. I think I know a little bit more about the two, particularly Shapiro, from that analysis. Is there more body language to see when being interviewed rather than just giving a speech (not reading a script, but talking extemporaneously)?

Not sure that Ben Shapiro would back away. Here he is threatened by Zoey Tur, a transgender who threatened to send him home in an ambulance. Tur was evidently a soldier and is much larger than Shapiro, invades his space and puts his hands on Shapiro’s neck, threatens him in a very personal manner, pulling Shapiro toward him and locking eyes. Zoey broke eye contact first, Shapiro didn’t let it drop. Shaprio is 5′ 9″, Zoey Tur is 6′ 2″. Tur COULD send Shapiro home in an ambulance.

https://youtu.be/gVimM_2emdk?t=204

I think Shapiro doesn’t often run into people who are actually as smart or smarter than him, so he is bashful around him. They are actually very good friends.

it keeps looking away in the beginning of the threat…Ben didnt take it as real because of that. not the same situation. an empty threat.

That threat would scare the shit out of me.

I usually follow your line of reasoning, but just can’t see it here. I’ve watched Ben Shapiro for a long time. He always looks like a miniature chihuahua, sort of vibrating all the time. He graduated at 16, talks about being young and small and vulnerable in that situation. He was a syndicated columnist at age 17, and relates this experience to Little Davey Hogg’s sudden sainthood, saying stupid things because he is young, and Shapiro says he said stupid things because of his lack of life experience. I think a person without self confidence doesn’t admit to error like that.

Shapiro is a little squirt, yet goes into the lion’s dens of leftist universities to speak. At one speech, protesting animals outside barred the exits and activated the fire alarm. He handled the possibility of being locked in and burned to death pretty well. Its on video, no time at the mo to go Binging for it. Client coming in a few

Thanks for the interaction, Mandy.

i tried to explain in the video…i did a bad job. Shapiro has confidence in his mind…not his physical prowess. being locked in vs a physical fight…one works the mind like a puzzle to escape…that is his strength….the other relies on brute force. also remember smart people(not just people with a lot of memory) can and a lot of times out think an individual that could do physical harm. Thank you mathmom for the challenge 🙂

If Shapiro is Atypical his perception of a threat will be different and his ability to stand his ground greater.

If you see those videos of kids on the spectrum being bullied and beaten you will notice one main consistency and that is they don’t run.

The body language will show exactly what Mandy described, but the inconsistency that you see is because he does not react the way we expect.

Not every young man with a head full of facts and what you perceive as hesitancy within himself is on “the spectrum”. I’m really fed up with people labeling genius guys this way. By this measure every engineer is “on the spectrum”. Steven Crowder said that that nice guy, James Damore, is “on the spectrum”. He’s just shy, and new to being fired for thinking.

I have a lot of experience with both child geniuses and autistic children. There is NOTHING wrong with Ben Shapiro. He’s just a genius. You don’t realize how different geniuses are until you play with them when they are little. They see things even smart people don’t see, but they still need to be kept in line and taught how to behave. When you fail in that, you raise a kid that might graduate from university at age 17, but will be hated by everyone because they will think other people are stupid, and say it.

Chill. Where did I say that autism is a problem? It is a personality type. In fact for a person to say there is NOTHING wrong with Shapiro whilst insisting he is not on the spectrum is insulting those with that personality type.

My son gets very angry when people do this to him. He is on the spectrum, like many of the male population.
Understanding the Atypical body language is very important in my house otherwise I have a hard time knowing what is going on.

Autism was much better when it was divided into Aspergers and Autism because then there was a divide between the two extremes.
Last thing I will add on the subject is my kid has an above average IQ, most lecturers in STEM subjects are on the spectrum. Your account probably is too. We had a Prime Minister that definitely is.

I’m not trying to start an argument. I’m just trying to say what I see. You can say you don’t see that but don’t get angry.

Oh… and yes most engineers are on the spectrum….

My son is/was Asperger’s. Fortunately, he’s now fine because they took away that distinction (sarcasm). He spends his time in a Day Habilitation center, even though he has an above-average IQ.

I know the difference, all too well. Autism isn’t a personality type, it is a disabling condition
which includes a malfunctioning brain.

Most engineers aren’t on the spectrum. They just like to build things, and thank God for that.

You meet 1 person with Asperger’s you have met 1 person with Asperger’s.

This is such a varied condition hence the word spectrum. It is not always a disabling condition. My son would argue it is a personality type but it is a very personal experience so who knows exactly what it is.
I can only speak from personal experience such as you do.

Oh my gosh. Quickly, firstly, I had no idea you existed, dear Bombard Lady, and I was amidst family (a rare thing) when my nephew put you on TV and told me I needed to watch. There are few times in my life my “body sings” and I knew your talent was, well, a thing that the whole world should be tuning-in to. You know, it is such a lie, this whole, literalized definition of “prophet.” The word itself has been made into an idol (by the literalizers or Pharisees), that teach these are God-Sent people that are to be lifted upon a pedestal as “holy” and that we, the ‘little people’ are to believe this because, by actually believing this, we diminish ourselves, that we are somehow incapable of the holy glory of the “prophet.” A prophet is a clear-seer, and it is earned. It is, in my case, birthed of personal pain that desires understanding and wisdom, and seeks, and finds, and connects the dots. The hard part (for me) is the self-sacrifice of having to put my face “out there,” for deeply personal reasons (I do not want to hurt my family). I only just joined, and have recently been overly occupied with other matters, and see I must jump in, as I also see you care enough to actually consider others’ thoughts.

Everything you are doing presents, though many will not see it in these terms, the Greatest Battle we all “fight” within ourselves that, if won over by the Good, leads us to a “risen mind” of greater peace, by having finally seen the Bigger Picture. Your work is entirely about the Literal Universe of the Letter of the Law and its most-feared enemy, the Unseen Universe of the Spirit of the Law (or the SUBSTANCE behind or OF the literal thing). In your case, you see the literal wrinkle-in-the-forehead where others do not yet, much more, you pair this with the eye-movements and all other facials “tells.” Of course, I am neither exalting you nor myself here. This, any and all good talents born of passion for the Good and Truth are within all of us, and I see you are a Good Teacher. It is so, so valuable. I wanted to write a few more lines, but repair-people are here and I will melt if the A/C is not fixed. HA! Love, from Reno.
